Fugitive banker nabbed in Shenzhen after on the run for 10 years

A FORMER manager of a State bank in Longgang District has been arrested after 10 years on the run, Shenzhen People’s Procuratorate said Monday.

The suspect, surnamed Xiao, was listed as a Class-B wanted fugitive by the Ministry of Public Security, which accuses him of embezzling 3.17 million yuan (US$503,170) of public money.

Xiao allegedly forged the seal of Longgang District Housing Bureau in 2002, then used the seal to withdraw more than 3 million yuan from the bureau’s account. Xiao escaped to Ecuador, with a new identity using the name Liu Huawei, via Singapore and the Netherlands in 2002, the procuratorate said.

Xiao returned to Guangzhou in November 2002 and hid in Nanning, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, for about 10 years with false identities. He was caught during the recent Spring Festival holidays.
