A SHENZHEN building planned for construction is expected to become the South China branch of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.
Jiang Hanping, director of the city’s commission of health, population and family planning, told local health industry leaders yesterday that a preparatory committee will start work at the end of this year and an integrative building is slated for completion by the end of 2016.
The academy will include national-level laboratories, experimental bases, an animal laboratory and a clinical experimental base. An information database will provide connections to national libraries and top international science Web sites.
The academy will increase collaboration between the city’s medical organizations and the world’s leading drug makers, medical equipment manufacturers and medical institutes.
"It will become a regional incubator and platform for medical sciences research, medical professional training and advanced biological medicine technology,” Jiang said.
Health industry leaders plan to upgrade Shenzhen’s medical talent and services in coming years with more medical facilities, improved services and a greater focus on medical research achievements.
Goals include 20 hospitals — those of the highest national standard — in the city by 2016. More than 40 senior experts will receive training at leading medical research institutes and hospitals every year, and outstanding young medical professionals will be given increased training and opportunities.
Jiang said research institutes and hospitals could receive new subsidies from the city. A staff evaluation system will help improve medical services for patients and provide a basis for hospital subsidies from local government.
