Meet Rachel Zhang, a rising international musician from Shenzhen

Born in 1987, percussionist Rachel Zhang (Zhang Xi) is best known as a marimba performer. Her performance at the National Grand Theater in national holiday was highly applauded.

Graduated with honors from Shenzhen Art School, Rachel is another “Shenzhen” musician that attracts international attention.

In 2005, Rachel went to Netherlands for further study. She alsohad lessons for piano and composition under the guidance of the masters homeand abroadA year later, she won the top prize in the Princess Christina Concours in Netherland and was recommended to be Jury of the competition in 2007.

In 2009, Rachel and her partenr were chosen by Nancy Zeltsman, the American percussionist to attend the 8th Zeltsman Marimba Festival. As the youngest competitor, Joint Venture Percussion Duo, the team Rachel belongs to, won the first prize in both Vriendenkrans and Het Debuut Concours, because of which, they were recipients of a scholarship from the Bernard Haitink Fund.

Rachel gets a good reputation not only in campus, but also in society. In May 2011, Looptail, the music sextet was formed by several young musicians, including Rachel. The band has toured China and Europe for the past several years.
